Particularly if you live in a rural or semi-rural setting, think about what would be your best action to take with a fire nearby ..While fire weather conditions have eased slightly from yesterday, very high fire danger is forecast this week for much of the state, with the Darling Downs, Granite Belt and south east coast expected to reach severe again in the coming days.

Would you know what to do if a fire broke out near you? Make sure you have a bushfire survival plan with answers to the following:
📝 Will you stay or leave?
📝 Where will you go if you leave?
📝 What will you take?
📝 Plan for livestock and pets?

Toowoomba Regional Council is constructing a library, customer service centre and community meeting facility in the Highfields Cultural Precinct. The project also includes upgrading the road network and car parking infrastructure in the vicinity.

The new facility will replace the existing temporary library which supports around 52,600 visitors each year.

The new library will be a modern, purpose-built facility to meet the current and future needs of the Highfields community. It will provide an outdoor area for children’s activities, dedicated reading spaces including outdoor reading areas facing the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve, computer facilities and free Wi-Fi access.

Overview of the new facility:

Built into the ground to take advantage of site topography.
Predominately single level with a mezzanine level.
Library and customer service centre will be located on the lower level for convenient access to Council services.
Community rooms will be located on the mezzanine level.
All external entrances will be accessible at grade level without the need for stairs.
An internal ramp will provide access between the lower level and the mezzanine level. The mezzanine will be accessible after hours.

A civic space will be established between the library and the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve for outdoor reading, library programs and community events. The location will offer safe pedestrian connections between community facilities in the precinct including the Highfields Cultural Centre and Highfields Fitness and Recreation Centre.

Construction is expected to commence from early 2020 and the new facility is expected to open in 2021.

“The current Highfields library is a demountable structure and does not have the space or facilities required to accommodate the growing number of library users in Highfields and its surrounding communities,” Cr Geoff McDonald said.

For further information about the Highfields Library Project, please contact Council on 131 872 or yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au. Please note that feedback on options has now closed, and the result will be announced late 2019.
