2020 Highfields Senior Sports Award - Greg Gall

Greg Gall is 67 years of age and over the last 50 years he has dedicated his time and passion to ensuring that young athletes can play and enjoy the sport of volleyball. The area in which Greg has excelled has been with the coaching of young players through to elite level. Most of Greg’s involvement with volleyball has been done on a voluntary basis including self-funding of travel costs and courses he has attended.

He has been prepared to travel long distances to where he was needed to coach teams. This has included trips to Melbourne over 12 years to coach Harristown High School teams in the Australian Schools’ Cup and travelling around south east Queensland and to Brisbane over 20 years to coach the Toowoomba Titans in the South East Queensland League and the Premier Volleyball League.

In 2000 Greg was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident, sustaining a brain injury as well as broken bones.
Only two months later he travelled to Sydney for training as a statistician for the Sydney Olympics. In September that year he was courtside recording statistics at volleyball venues at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. After the Olympics he successfully applied for a Commonwealth grant to purchase Olympic volleyball flooring and equipment which was needed for a new Harristown High gym. This has enabled the school to continue to develop their high-quality teaching and playing with state-of-the-art facilities.

Greg has been awarded life memberships of the Toowoomba Volleyball Association and the Queensland Volleyball Association. These are a testament to the high respect in which he is held in the local and state levels. His dedication and lifetime commitment to coaching volleyball and mentoring young people are inspirational.

Many of the young people who have played under Greg’s leadership have remained in the sport and are now the leaders and active members of the local association. He is proud that his lifetime love of volleyball is being continued by the next generation.

Particularly if you live in a rural or semi-rural setting, think about what would be your best action to take with a fire nearby ..While fire weather conditions have eased slightly from yesterday, very high fire danger is forecast this week for much of the state, with the Darling Downs, Granite Belt and south east coast expected to reach severe again in the coming days.

Would you know what to do if a fire broke out near you? Make sure you have a bushfire survival plan with answers to the following:
📝 Will you stay or leave?
📝 Where will you go if you leave?
📝 What will you take?
📝 Plan for livestock and pets?
